How Buying Works — 8-Step Process

Every tote we sell goes through a rigorous inspection and reconditioning process before it leaves our facility. You get containers that are clean, structurally sound, and ready for immediate use.

Our buying process is designed for transparency and speed. From first inquiry to delivery, most orders are completed within 5 business days. Here is exactly what happens at each stage.

1

Submit an Inquiry

Contact us by phone, email, or through our online form. Tell us the quantity you need, the tote grade (food-grade, industrial, or chemical-compatible), preferred delivery date, and your facility location. The more detail you provide, the faster we can match you with the right inventory.

2

Inventory Matching

Our team cross-references your requirements against our current inventory of 1,200+ totes on hand. We verify grade, condition, previous contents, and manufacturing date to ensure every tote meets your specifications. If we do not have the exact match in stock, we source it from our network within 48 hours.

3

Receive a Detailed Quote

Within 24 hours you receive a line-item quote that includes per-unit pricing, applicable volume discounts, transportation costs, and estimated delivery date. There are no hidden fees or middlemen markups. The price you see is the price you pay.

4

Quality Pre-Check

Before shipment, every tote in your order goes through a final quality pre-check. We verify structural integrity, valve function, label accuracy, and cleanliness to your ordered grade. Any unit that does not pass is replaced before your order leaves our facility.

5

Schedule Delivery

Pick a delivery window that works for your operation. Standard delivery takes 3-5 business days across our primary West Coast coverage area. Expedited and same-day options are available in metro areas for an additional charge.

6

Receive & Inspect

Our driver delivers directly to your dock, yard, or warehouse. You or your team inspects the totes upon arrival. If anything does not match the ordered grade or specification, we replace it at no cost under our quality guarantee.

7

Documentation & Payment

You receive a complete documentation package including invoice, bill of lading, grade certificate, and certificate of analysis (COA) where applicable. Payment is due per your agreed terms — typically Net 30 for approved business accounts.

8

Ongoing Support

We follow up after every delivery to confirm satisfaction. Need more totes next month? Recurring supply contracts lock in your rate and guarantee availability. Our team is always a phone call away for reorders, questions, or service adjustments.

How Selling Works — 8-Step Process

Stop paying to store or dispose of empty totes. We buy used IBC containers in any condition and handle every aspect of the logistics from pickup to payment.

Whether you have 5 totes or 5,000, our selling process is fast, fair, and hassle-free. Here is the complete step-by-step breakdown.

1

Contact Us with Details

Tell us about your totes: approximate quantity, brand, age, previous contents, and current condition. Photos are helpful but not required. We accept totes in any condition — clean, with residue, damaged, or end-of-life.

2

Free Condition Assessment

Based on your description or photos, we provide a preliminary grade assessment and buyback estimate. For large lots (50+ totes), we can send an assessor to your facility for an in-person evaluation at no cost.

3

Receive a Buyback Quote

Within 24 hours you receive a firm buyback quote with per-unit pricing based on tote grade and condition. Clean food-grade totes command the highest rates. Industrial and damaged totes are quoted at fair market value. No haggling, no low-ball offers.

4

Schedule Pickup

Choose a pickup date and time window that fits your schedule. Our trucks arrive on time with all necessary equipment. You do not need a forklift or loading dock, though both speed up the process. We handle all loading.

5

On-Site Verification

Our crew performs a quick on-site count and condition spot-check to confirm the lot matches the quoted assessment. If totes are in better condition than estimated, we adjust the payment upward. If conditions differ significantly, we work with you to adjust the quote fairly.

6

Totes Loaded & Transported

Our crew loads the totes onto our truck using proper securing and stacking techniques. We handle all transportation logistics back to our facility. You do not need to arrange anything — just point us to the totes and we take it from there.

7

Fast Payment

Payment is processed promptly after pickup. For standard lots, expect payment within 3-5 business days via your preferred method (check, ACH, or wire transfer). For recurring sellers with established accounts, we offer same-day or next-day payment.

8

Recycling Certificate (if applicable)

If any totes in your lot are end-of-life and go to recycling rather than resale, you receive a recycling certificate documenting the responsible disposal of those units. This supports your environmental compliance reporting and sustainability metrics.

Grade-Based Pricing Explained

Every IBC tote we handle is graded on a standardized scale based on condition, cleanliness, and intended use. The grade determines both the selling price (when you buy from us) and the buyback rate (when you sell to us). Understanding the grading system helps you get the best value whether buying or selling.

Grading is performed by our trained quality inspectors using a 16-point inspection checklist. Each tote is individually assessed — we do not make assumptions based on lot averages.

Grade A — Food-Grade

Like-new condition

Totes that have been used only for food-safe products (edible oils, syrups, juices, potable water) and show minimal wear. Bottles are white or near-white with no staining, warping, or cracks. Cages are straight and free of rust. Valves function perfectly. These totes are cleaned to FDA 21 CFR standards and are suitable for direct food contact applications.

Buy Price:Premium pricing
Sell/Buyback:Highest buyback rate

Grade B — Industrial Clean

Good condition, minor cosmetic wear

Totes previously used for non-food industrial liquids such as soaps, detergents, lubricants, or water-based chemicals. Bottles may show light discoloration or minor scuffing but are structurally sound with no cracks or warping. Cages may have minor surface rust but are structurally intact. Valves are functional. Cleaned to industrial standards.

Buy Price:Mid-range pricing
Sell/Buyback:Competitive buyback rate

Grade C — Industrial Standard

Fair condition, visible wear

Totes with moderate cosmetic wear including noticeable discoloration, label remnants, and cage surface rust. Bottles are structurally sound but may show yellowing or staining that cannot be fully removed. Suitable for non-food industrial applications where cosmetics are not a concern. Cleaned to industrial standards.

Buy Price:Economy pricing
Sell/Buyback:Standard buyback rate

Grade D — As-Is / Salvage

Heavy wear, minor damage acceptable

Totes with significant wear, heavy staining, minor cracks in non-structural areas, bent cage components, or damaged pallets. These totes can still hold liquid safely but show extensive signs of age and use. Suitable for non-critical storage, waste collection, or single-use applications. Sold as-is with no cleaning guarantee.

Buy Price:Lowest pricing
Sell/Buyback:Base buyback rate

End-of-Life / Recycling

Not suitable for reuse

Totes with major structural damage, large cracks, perforations, severe contamination, or components that are beyond economical repair. These totes are accepted for recycling only. We recover the HDPE plastic, steel, and wood components and provide a recycling certificate for your records.

Bulk Discount Tiers

The more you buy or sell, the better the rate. Our volume-based pricing is designed for businesses that move serious quantities — whether that is 10 totes or 10,000. Volume discounts apply to both purchases and buybacks.

Discounts are calculated on the total order quantity and applied automatically to your quote. Recurring supply contracts receive an additional discount on top of the volume tier.

16-Point Quality Inspection Criteria

Every IBC tote we sell passes a comprehensive 16-point inspection before it leaves our facility. This inspection covers every critical component of the tote, from the HDPE bottle and steel cage to the valve, pallet, and labeling. Trade-In & Exchange Options

Beyond traditional buying and selling, we offer flexible trade-in and exchange programs that let you maintain a clean, reliable tote fleet without the capital outlay of purchasing new containers.

These programs are especially popular with food and beverage producers, chemical distributors, and any operation that needs clean totes on an ongoing basis but does not want to manage the cleaning and reconditioning process in-house.

Trade-In Upgrade

Save 25-40% vs. buying outright

Trade in your old totes and receive freshly cleaned, reconditioned totes in return. Pay only the difference between your trade-in value and the reconditioned tote price. Ideal for operations that want to maintain a clean fleet without the hassle of cleaning.

One-for-One Swap

Flat fee per tote

For every clean tote you return, receive a clean reconditioned tote in exchange. We handle all cleaning and reconditioning. No cash changes hands — just a flat service fee per tote for cleaning and logistics.

Fleet Rotation Program

Predictable per-use cost

We maintain a rotating fleet of totes for your operation. Dirty totes are picked up and replaced with clean ones on a regular schedule. You never own the totes — you simply pay a per-use fee that covers the tote, cleaning, and transportation.

Pricing Transparency

We believe you should understand exactly how the price on your quote was determined. IBC tote pricing is not arbitrary -- it is driven by measurable factors that our team evaluates on every transaction. Below is a detailed breakdown of how we arrive at both purchase prices (when you buy from us) and buyback rates (when you sell to us).

Every quote we issue includes a line-item breakdown, so you can see exactly what you are paying for. There are no hidden fees, no middleman markups, and no surprise surcharges added after the fact.

What Determines Purchase Price (Buying From Us)

Tote Grade

Food-grade totes (Grade A) command the highest price due to the rigorous cleaning, inspection, and certification process required. Industrial clean (Grade B) totes are mid-range. Industrial standard (Grade C) and as-is (Grade D) totes are the most affordable. The grade you need depends on what you intend to store -- food products require Grade A, while non-food industrial liquids can use Grade B or C.

Container Condition

Within each grade, totes in better cosmetic condition command slightly higher prices. A Grade B tote with a near-white bottle and clean cage will cost more than a Grade B tote with moderate discoloration and surface rust, even though both meet the same functional specification.

Manufacturing Date

Newer totes have more remaining useful life and therefore cost more. HDPE degrades slowly over time, especially with UV exposure, so a two-year-old tote is worth more than a five-year-old tote of the same grade. The manufacturing date is stamped on every tote and is part of our grading assessment.

Order Quantity

Volume discounts reduce your per-unit cost significantly. At 25 totes, you save 5%. At 100 totes, you save 12%. At 500+, you save 18% or more. Enterprise pricing for 1,000+ totes is custom-negotiated based on your annual commitment.

Transportation

Delivery cost is either included (for qualifying order sizes) or quoted as a separate line item based on distance, volume, and vehicle type. Customer pickup eliminates delivery cost entirely.

What Determines Buyback Rate (Selling To Us)

Previous Contents

Totes that held food-safe products are worth the most because they can be reconditioned to food-grade with standard cleaning. Totes that held industrial chemicals require more intensive cleaning and are worth less. Totes that held hazardous materials have the lowest buyback value due to decontamination costs, though we still purchase them at fair market rates.

Physical Condition

Clean totes with intact bottles, straight cages, functional valves, and solid pallets command premium buyback rates. Each component is assessed individually. A tote with a perfect bottle but a bent cage is worth more than one with a cracked bottle and a good cage, because the bottle is the most expensive component to replace.

Age and Remaining Life

Newer totes have more reconditioning cycles ahead of them, which makes them more valuable. Totes manufactured within the last three years receive the highest buyback rates. Older totes are still purchased, but at reduced rates that reflect the shorter remaining useful life.

Lot Size

Larger lots are more efficient for us to process, so we pass those savings back to you in the form of higher per-unit buyback rates. Lots of 25 or more receive a 5% premium. Lots of 100+ receive 10%. Lots of 500+ are quoted at enterprise rates.

Current Market Conditions

IBC tote supply and demand fluctuate seasonally. When demand is high (spring and summer), buyback rates increase because we need more inventory. When demand is lower (winter), rates soften. Recurring seller contracts lock in your rate regardless of market fluctuations.

Price Comparison: New vs. Reconditioned IBC Totes

A brand-new IBC tote from a manufacturer typically costs between $250 and $450 depending on specifications. Our reconditioned totes provide the same functional performance at a fraction of the cost, while keeping existing containers out of landfills.

Seller's Guide -- Maximizing Your Buyback Value

If you are planning to sell used IBC totes, a small amount of preparation can significantly increase your buyback rate. Below is a practical guide to what affects tote value and how to get the most from every container you sell.

Keep in mind that we buy totes in any condition -- you do not need to do any of this to sell to us. But if you want to maximize your return, these steps make a measurable difference.

Preparation Tips That Increase Value

Drain completely: Totes with residual product cost us more to process. Draining to the extent possible before pickup increases your buyback rate.
Rinse if convenient: A quick water rinse removes loose residue and can bump a tote from Grade C to Grade B pricing. This is especially valuable for totes that held water-soluble products.
Keep valves intact: Totes with working butterfly valves are worth more than those with missing or damaged valves. Do not remove valves for other purposes if you plan to sell the tote.
Protect from UV exposure: HDPE degrades in sunlight, turning yellow and becoming brittle. Store empty totes indoors or under cover. Sun-damaged bottles are downgraded significantly.
Keep labels readable: If the original manufacturer label is still legible, it helps us verify the manufacturing date and resin specification, which can increase the assigned grade.
Avoid stacking full totes: Stacking totes when filled causes cage deformation and bottle bulging. Damaged cages reduce buyback value. Stack only empty totes, and limit stacking to 3 high.

What Reduces Buyback Value

Cracked or perforated bottles: Any crack in the HDPE bottle, no matter how small, drops the tote to salvage/recycling pricing. Bottles cannot be economically repaired.
Severe chemical staining: Deep staining from dark-colored chemicals (dyes, inks, tar-based products) that penetrates the HDPE cannot be removed by cleaning and permanently downgrades the tote.
Strong residual odor: Persistent chemical odors indicate product has been absorbed into the HDPE. These totes can only be reused for the same product family or recycled.
Severely bent cages: Cages with multiple bent tubes, broken welds, or missing crossbars cost more to repair than the repair adds in value. Minor bends are straightened at our facility.
Broken pallets: Pallets with cracked stringers, missing boards, or split runners are replaced during reconditioning. The replacement cost is deducted from the buyback rate.
Missing or modified valves: Totes with missing bottom valves or non-standard modifications that we did not perform are downgraded because a new valve must be sourced and installed.
Hazardous residue: Totes that held listed hazardous materials require decontamination before reconditioning. The decontamination cost reduces the net buyback value, though we still purchase these totes.

Estimated Buyback Value by Tote Condition

The following ranges represent typical buyback values. Actual rates depend on current market conditions, lot size, and the specific condition of each tote. These ranges assume standard 275-gallon or 330-gallon IBC totes with intact cages and pallets.

ConditionTypical Buyback RangeWhat We Look For
One-trip food-grade, clean$60 - $100 per toteWhite bottle, no stains, working valve, food-safe previous contents only
Clean industrial, good condition$35 - $65 per toteMinor cosmetic wear, functional valve, no structural damage
Used industrial, moderate wear$15 - $35 per toteVisible staining, light cage damage, functional but shows age
Heavy wear / damaged$5 - $15 per toteSignificant damage but still holds liquid, suitable for single reuse
End-of-life / recycling onlyFree pickup (10+) or $0-$5Cracked bottles, severe damage, not suitable for reuse

Market Insights -- Current IBC Tote Conditions

Understanding market dynamics helps you make smarter buying and selling decisions. The used IBC tote market on the West Coast is influenced by several factors that shift throughout the year. Here is what we are seeing in the current market and what it means for you.

IBC West Coast processes thousands of totes every month and has direct visibility into supply, demand, and pricing trends across our seven-state coverage area. We share these insights openly because informed customers make better partners.

Supply Side Dynamics

The supply of used IBC totes on the West Coast comes primarily from food and beverage processors, chemical distributors, and agricultural operations. Supply peaks in late summer and fall as seasonal operations wind down and companies conduct year-end inventory clearouts. During spring, supply tightens as many of these same industries are ramping up and holding onto containers for active use.

Food-grade totes are the most sought-after and typically the first to sell out. One-trip totes -- containers that have been used only once since manufacturing -- are particularly scarce because they represent the highest grade of reconditioned tote available. Supply of industrial-grade totes is generally more stable throughout the year.

HDPE resin prices influence the recycling value of end-of-life totes. When virgin HDPE prices are high, recycled regrind commands better pricing, which indirectly supports buyback rates across all grades.

Demand Side Dynamics

Demand for reconditioned IBC totes has increased steadily over the past several years, driven by two factors: cost savings compared to new totes, and corporate sustainability initiatives that favor reused containers over virgin manufacturing. Companies across the West Coast are actively replacing new-tote purchasing programs with reconditioned-tote supply agreements.

The agricultural sector drives a significant demand spike from March through June as growers purchase totes for liquid fertilizers, pesticides, and irrigation additives. Food and beverage demand is strong year-round but peaks in summer months when production volumes are highest. Chemical and industrial demand tends to be more consistent across seasons.

The growing emphasis on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) reporting has created a new demand driver. Companies that can document the use of reconditioned containers in their sustainability reports are actively seeking certified suppliers, which benefits businesses that buy from auditable sources like IBC West Coast.

Strategic Buying and Selling Recommendations

Best Time to Buy

December through February offers the best pricing and widest selection. Demand is at its lowest while supply remains steady from year-end clearouts. If you can plan ahead and stock up during winter months, you will save 5-10% compared to peak-season purchasing.

Best Time to Sell

March through June is when buyback rates are highest, driven by agricultural and food industry demand. If you have surplus totes sitting in your yard, spring is the time to convert them to cash. Clean food-grade totes command peak premiums during this window.

Lock in Rates Year-Round

The smartest approach is a recurring supply or buyback contract that locks in your rate for 6-12 months regardless of seasonal fluctuations. Contract customers are insulated from peak-season price spikes and supply constraints.

Payment Terms -- Detailed Guide

We offer flexible payment structures for both buyers and sellers. Our goal is to make every transaction as frictionless as possible, whether you are purchasing one tote with a credit card or managing a six-figure annual supply contract with extended payment terms.

For sellers, we pride ourselves on fast payment. When you sell totes to us, you should not have to wait weeks for your money. Below is a comprehensive breakdown of payment terms for both sides of the transaction.

Buyer Payment Options

Immediate Payment (Credit Card, Wire, ACH)

Orders paid at the time of purchase ship immediately upon availability. Credit card limits of $25,000 per transaction. Wire and ACH transfers have no upper limit. ACH is free; wire transfer fees vary by bank.

Net 30 (Standard Business Terms)

Available for approved business accounts. Complete a one-page credit application and receive a decision within 2 business days. No minimum purchase required once approved. Invoice is generated upon shipment, and payment is due 30 days from the invoice date.

Net 60 (Enterprise Terms)

Available for accounts with annual purchase commitments exceeding $100,000 or volume program enrollment. Extended terms allow you to align tote procurement costs with your product sales cycle.

Deposit + Balance (Custom Modifications)

Custom modification orders require a 50% deposit to begin work. The remaining balance is invoiced upon completion and is due before or upon delivery. This structure covers our material procurement costs while keeping your out-of-pocket commitment manageable until the work is complete.

Seller Payment Schedule

Standard Payment (3-5 Business Days)

After we pick up your totes and verify the lot at our facility, payment is processed within 3-5 business days. This is the standard timeline for first-time sellers and smaller lots. Payment is issued via your preferred method -- check, ACH, or wire transfer.

Expedited Payment (Same Day or Next Day)

Available for established recurring sellers with verified accounts. Once we have a track record with you and know your typical lot quality, we process payment immediately upon pickup based on the pre-assessed lot value. Adjustments (if any) are handled on the next transaction.

Recurring Seller Contracts

Sellers who provide totes on a regular basis can lock in a fixed buyback rate per tote per grade for 3, 6, or 12 months. Payments are processed on a fixed schedule (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly) based on accumulated pickups. This provides predictable cash flow for your operation.

Credit Toward Purchases

If you are both buying and selling totes, we can apply your buyback credit directly to your next purchase order, reducing or eliminating the cash outlay. This is popular with operations that rotate tote fleets -- sell the old, buy the clean, and only pay the net difference.

Credit Application Process

Applying for Net 30 or Net 60 terms is straightforward. Complete our one-page credit application providing your company name, tax ID, bank reference, and two trade references. Our accounting team reviews applications within 2 business days and typically approves accounts with established business credit. New businesses without credit history may be asked to complete 2-3 prepaid orders before being approved for terms. There is no application fee and no ongoing cost for maintaining a credit account.

Our Quality Guarantee

Every IBC tote we sell is inspected for structural integrity, valve function, and cleanliness using our 16-point quality checklist. If a tote does not meet the grade you ordered, we replace it at no cost — no questions asked, no paperwork required.

We stand behind what we sell because our reputation depends on your satisfaction. Over 95% of our business comes from repeat customers and referrals, and we intend to keep it that way by delivering consistent quality on every single order.
