How to Identify the Right Part

IBC totes look similar from the outside, but parts are not always interchangeable across manufacturers. Follow this guide to identify exactly what you need before ordering.

Step 1: Find the Manufacturer

Look for a molded-in logo or stamped nameplate on the HDPE bottle, usually near the fill port or on the bottom. Common manufacturers include Schutz, Mauser (now MAUSER Packaging Solutions), Greif, and Werit. The manufacturer determines the cage dimensions, bottle thread pitch, and cap size. If the logo is worn off, check the metal nameplate riveted to the cage frame.

Step 2: Note the Model Number

Below or beside the manufacturer logo, there is usually a model designation such as "MX" (Mauser), "Ecobulk" (Schutz), or a numeric code. This model number tells us the exact cage geometry, pallet type, and bottle wall thickness. Write it down or photograph it. If the nameplate is missing, measure the outer dimensions and send us the measurements.

Step 3: Identify the Valve Thread

The standard IBC outlet thread is S60x6 (60mm diameter with a 6mm coarse pitch). However, some European-origin totes use DIN 61 (also 60mm but with a finer pitch), and a small number use 2-inch BSP or NPT threads. The easiest way to check is to bring the existing valve to a hardware supply or send us a clear close-up photo of the thread profile.

Step 4: Measure the Fill Port

Most IBC totes have a 150mm (approximately 6-inch) fill opening. Some older or specialty models use a 225mm (9-inch) opening. Measure the outer diameter of the threaded neck, not the inner opening. Caps and lids are specific to the neck diameter and thread profile, so a measurement error here means the wrong cap.

Step 5: Check the Pallet Footprint

Standard North American IBCs sit on a 48 x 40-inch pallet. European pallets are 1200 x 1000mm (approximately 47 x 39 inches). The pallet must match the cage base exactly, so confirm which footprint you need. Also note whether the existing pallet is wood, plastic, or steel, since the cage mounting hardware differs between pallet types.

Step 6: Send Us a Photo

When in doubt, a clear photograph solves most identification problems faster than measurements alone. Take a photo of the manufacturer label, the valve connection, and any damaged component you want to replace. Email or text the images to our team and we will confirm the correct replacement part, usually within an hour during business hours.

Refurbishment vs Replacement: When to Repair and When to Replace

Not every damaged tote needs to be replaced entirely. In many cases, replacing a single component -- a valve, gasket, cap, cage panel, or pallet -- can return the tote to full service at a fraction of the cost of a new or reconditioned replacement. Here is a guide to help you make the right call.

IssueRepair (Part Replacement)Replace (Entire Tote)Estimated Repair Cost
Valve dripping when closedReplace valve and gasket -- 5-minute jobNot necessary$15-$40
Fill cap not sealingReplace cap and gasketNot necessary$8-$15
Single cage panel dentedReplace individual panel if available for your brandOnly if multiple panels are damaged$30-$60
Pallet cracked or rottedSwap pallet base -- requires bottle liftOnly if bottle is also damaged$40-$80
Bottle has hairline crackNot repairable -- bottle must be replaced (rebottling)Consider full replacement if cage is also damaged$120-$180 (rebottle)
Bottle has UV degradationReplace bottle if cage and pallet are soundIf degradation is severe and cage is also worn$120-$180 (rebottle)
Multiple cage panels bentPossible but labor-intensiveUsually more cost-effective to replace the entire tote$80-$150 (multiple panels)
Bottle bulging through cageNot safe -- indicates wall thinning under pressureYes -- immediate replacement recommendedN/A -- retire the tote
Corner post bent or brokenReplace corner post if available for your brandOnly if structural integrity is compromised$25-$45
Cage bolts and clips missingInstall new hardware kitNot necessary$10-$20

The Break-Even Rule of Thumb

As a general rule, if the total cost of parts and labor to repair a tote exceeds 60% of the cost of a replacement tote (used or reconditioned), it is more economical to replace the entire unit. For example, if a reconditioned replacement costs $150 and your repair bill would be $90 or more, replacing makes more financial sense because the replacement comes with new hardware, a warranty, and a longer expected service life.

However, this rule has exceptions. If the tote has a specific configuration that is difficult to source (unusual size, custom valve, or rare manufacturer), repairing may be more practical even at a higher relative cost. Similarly, if you need the tote back in service immediately and a replacement would take days to arrive, a quick repair wins on time even if it is not the cheapest option long-term.

Cage Repair Services

The galvanized steel cage is the structural backbone of a composite IBC tote. When cage components are damaged, the tote cannot safely stack, ship, or contain liquid under load. Rather than scrapping the entire tote, our cage repair services can restore structural integrity at a fraction of replacement cost.

Panel Straightening

Minor dents and bends in cage side panels can often be straightened using hydraulic press tools without removing the panel from the cage. This is the fastest and most cost-effective repair for forklift impact damage that has not torn the wire mesh. Turnaround time is typically same-day for totes brought to our facility.

Panel Replacement

Severely damaged panels -- torn mesh, crushed sections, or panels with multiple bends -- must be replaced entirely. We stock common panel sizes for Schutz, Mauser, and Greif cages. Panel replacement involves unbolting the damaged section, installing the new panel, and re-torquing all fasteners to specification. Typical turnaround is 1-2 business days.

Corner Post Repair

Bent corner posts compromise the cage's ability to stack and transfer load. Minor bends can be straightened in-place. Severely bent or cracked posts must be cut out and replaced with new sections welded to the top and bottom frames. Post replacement requires MIG welding on galvanized steel and should only be performed by qualified fabricators.

Top Frame Repair

The top frame supports the fill port collar and distributes stacking loads to the corner posts. Common damage includes bent tubes, broken welds at corner joints, and a distorted fill port opening that prevents caps from sealing properly. We repair or replace top frames and re-galvanize weld points to prevent corrosion.

Bottom Frame and Skid Repair

The bottom frame connects the cage to the pallet and provides the structural base for forklift handling. Damage typically occurs from side impacts during forklift operations. We straighten bent skid rails, re-weld broken joints, and replace missing or damaged bolt-down hardware that secures the cage to the pallet.

Complete Cage Refurbishment

For totes with multiple cage issues, a complete refurbishment may be the most efficient approach. This includes straightening all panels, replacing any damaged sections, re-torquing all fasteners, repairing or replacing corner posts, and applying touch-up galvanizing to all weld points and bare metal areas. Cost is typically 40-60% of a new cage assembly.

On-Site vs In-Shop Repairs

Simple repairs like panel straightening, bolt tightening, and gasket replacement can be performed on-site at your facility. We offer mobile repair service for customers in the greater San Francisco Bay Area with fleets of 10 or more totes needing attention. Our technician arrives with a fully equipped service van, tools, and common replacement parts.

Welding repairs, panel replacements, and complete cage refurbishments should be performed in our shop for safety and quality reasons. We can arrange pickup and return delivery of totes needing in-shop work. Typical in-shop turnaround is 3-5 business days from receipt.
